FTC and consumer-watchdog data show scam calls rising as voice impersonation makes them harder to detect.

Findsio Flags Scam Call Risk as FTC Reports $3.5B in Losses

Findsio, an online reverse phone lookup service, today pointed to new government and consumer-watchdog data showing that unwanted and fraudulent phone calls remain widespread and increasingly difficult to identify by voice alone. The company said the trend reinforces the case for checking an unknown number before answering or returning a call.

According to Federal Trade Commission testimony delivered to the U.S. Joint Economic Committee, imposter scams were the most frequently reported fraud category in 2025 for a fifth consecutive year, generating more than 1 million reports and over $3.5 billion in reported losses — nearly one-third of all fraud reports the agency received. Total reported fraud losses across all categories reached $15.9 billion in 2025, the highest figure on record.

A separate 2025 report from the U.S. PIRG Education Fund, as reported by Yahoo News, found that spam robocall volume averaged 2.56 billion calls per month last year, the highest level since 2019, and that roughly one in three Americans now receives at least one scam call every day. Consumers who lost money to a scam call lost an average of $3,690, the report found.

The FTC has separately warned consumers that scammers increasingly use artificial intelligence to clone the voice of a family member, employer or other trusted contact, making a call sound convincing even when the person speaking is not who they claim to be. The agency advises hanging up and calling the person back on a number already known to be theirs before sending money or sharing information.

“A familiar voice used to be enough reassurance to pick up the phone. That’s no longer a safe assumption,” said Jordan Ellis, Director of Communications at Findsio. “People are increasingly running a number through a lookup first, not after something has already gone wrong.”

A Findsio report checks a number’s carrier type and flags numbers associated with internet-based VoIP services, which can be created anonymously within minutes from anywhere in the world and are commonly used for disposable or spoofed calling. The service, used by more than 14,000 people daily according to the company, draws on publicly available records to surface possible name matches, address history, linked social media accounts and a spam risk indicator for a searched number, covering numbers from more than 150 countries.

Findsio recommends that consumers treat an unexpected call about a bank account, a government agency or a financial opportunity as unverified by default, regardless of how the caller identifies themselves, and check the number independently through Findsio before acting on anything it says.
